Mark Meadows to Face Criminal Contempt for Refusing to Cooperate with Jan. 6 Committee

House Panel Advances Proceedings After Negotiations Break Down

Former Chief of Staff Defies Subpoena, Claims Executive Privilege

WASHINGTON - The House committee investigating the January 6 attack on the Capitol has voted to advance criminal contempt proceedings against former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows. The decision came after negotiations between Meadows and the committee broke down, resulting in his refusal to comply with a subpoena.

The committee's report, released on Sunday, outlined its case for criminal contempt against Meadows. The report alleges that Meadows was involved in planning and coordinating efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election, including the events that led to the Capitol attack.

Meadows has claimed executive privilege as a basis for defying the subpoena. However, the committee has argued that executive privilege does not apply to Meadows's actions after Trump left office.

The criminal contempt proceedings will now be referred to the Department of Justice. If Meadows is convicted, he could face up to one year in prison.
