Manny Diaz Fired: Miami Hurricanes Make Coaching Change

Former Hurricanes standout Mario Cristobal expected to be named replacement

Diaz led Miami to a 21-15 record in three seasons

Miami fired coach Manny Diaz on Monday after three seasons, a source confirmed to ESPN. Diaz went 21-15 during his tenure, including a 7-5 mark this season.

Mario Cristobal, a former Miami standout who is currently the head coach at Oregon, is expected to be named Diaz's replacement, sources told ESPN.

Diaz, 48, was hired in December 2018 after Mark Richt retired. He had previously been the defensive coordinator at Miami from 2016-18 and was also the head coach at Temple from 2011-15.

Diaz led Miami to an 8-3 record in his first season, but the Hurricanes slipped to 6-7 in 2020 and 7-5 this season. Miami finished unranked in the final Associated Press poll of the regular season for the third straight year.

Cristobal, 51, was a two-time All-American offensive lineman at Miami in the early 1990s. He has been the head coach at Oregon since 2018 and has led the Ducks to a 35-13 record, including a Pac-12 championship in 2019.

Miami is scheduled to play in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 31 against Washington State. It is unclear if Diaz will coach the Hurricanes in that game.
