Early Life and Education

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on September 5, 1888, in a small village in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. His father, Sarvepalli Veeraswami, was a schoolteacher, and his mother, Sitamma, was a pious woman.

Radhakrishnan was a brilliant student, and he excelled in his studies. He graduated from Christian College, Madras, in 1906, with a degree in philosophy. He then went on to study at the University of Madras, where he earned a master's degree in philosophy in 1909.

Academic Career

After graduating from the University of Madras, Radhakrishnan began his teaching career at Presidency College, Madras. He quickly rose through the ranks, and in 1918, he was appointed professor of philosophy.

Philosophy

Radhakrishnan's philosophy was based on the idea of Advaita Vedanta. Advaita Vedanta is a monistic philosophy that teaches that the universe is an illusion and that the only reality is Brahman, the Absolute.

Radhakrishnan believed that all religions are ultimately the same. He said, "There is no conflict between science and religion. Both are different ways of approaching the same reality." He also believed that the best way to live is to live a life of love and compassion.

Political Career

In addition to his academic career, Radhakrishnan also had a long and distinguished political career.

• He served as India's ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1949 to 1952.
• He was elected Vice President of India in 1952 and President of India in 1962.

In 1962, the Government of India established the Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Award, which is given to outstanding teachers in India.
